I’ve attended a few interesting Chinese weddings before – evidence here, here, here and here – but it’s very safe to say that the one I was at a couple of weekends ago was by far the craziest. Like the other Hui Minority weddings I’ve seen, the groom and best man had their faces painted black and were locked up in chains. Unlike those other weddings, another element was added which was a ceremony of carrying the bride from her family’s house over to her new house. This feat was accomplished by eight people shouldering an apparatus shown below.
Apparently, part of this ceremony also entails having someone “wear” a donkey costume and dance around in front of the bride-carriers to help keep the party “re nao” (loud and spirited, a good thing in China). Guess who got to be the donkey wearer?
